1998 - February, The presidencial ellecions won Miguel Angel Rodriguez, a candidate of Social Christian Unity Party.

1998 - 5th of May; The Arenal volcano eruption. The Centre of Thermal Water has been threated.

1998 - 17th of April, The Puntarenas diocese foundation.

1998 - The statue of Daniel Oduber Quiros has been erected.

1998 - July; Nicaragua prohibited Costa Rican civil guards from carrying guns while sailing to their posts on the Costa Rican side of the river.

2000 - January; The touristic plane crash in Rohrmoser (San Jose quarter). 4 people died, 15 wounded.

2000 - January; Due to the strong rains, the inundaciones in valleys of Talamanca, Matina and Estrella in the carribean coast. 700 people have been evacuated.

2000 - A fire gutted a nursing home in Tilaran. 17 residents have been killed.

2000 - One people has been killed and two have been wounded after the strongest Arenal volcanoe eruption since 1968.

2001 - Costa Rica after 40 years reopen Cuban consulate in San Jose.
