FAUNA AND FLORA: General info

For centuries Costa Rica has been a naturally bridge between North and South Americas. Such geographical strategic position gave unusual biological configuration, mixing southern range of North America`s fauna and flora with northern range of South America`s fauna and flora.

Costa Rica fauna and flora compose of total 5 % of world biosphere. 10 % of Costa Rica plants are of endemic species. The World Resources Institute showed that Costa Rica has the most varied fauna of any country on the planet. It is measured in terms of different species per unit area.

The National Institute of Biodiversity (INBIO) - an organization formed in 1989 has been charged with task of collecting, identifing and labeling every plant and animal species in Costa Rica.
