Bolanos Island Wildlife Refuge

Bolanos Island Wildlife Refuge

(25 ha), (1981). It`s situated 1,5 kilometre off the Descartes point in Salinas Bay (Guanacaste province), not far from the border with Nicaragua. It consists of oval-shaped, rocky island that rises at 81 metres above sea level. The sparse vegetation consists mainly of very thick shrubs. There stunted 2 metres high forests (frangipani, gumbo-limbo, crown fig). The island protects nesting sites of brown pelicans, american oystercatchers (the largest colony in the country), and the only in Costa Rica nesting sitee of magnificent frigatebird. There are also black vultures, some bats and a large population of ctenosaurs.
