Chirripo National Park

Chirripo National Park

It`s situated in the territories of four provinces: San Jose, Puntarenas, Cartago and Limon. It`s stuck to the International Costa Rica-Panama Park of Friendship (La Amistad), with which it`s often considered to be one structure. The park was createdin 1982. As a World Heritage Site in 1983. In the vicinity of Chirripo Peak (3.819 m.a.s.l.-the highest peack of the country), there are caves of postglaciar origin, which are surrounded by parano forests. All postglaciar valleys, moraine deposits and lakes appeared more or less 30 millions years ago. The largest trees include oaks, sweet cedar, nargusta, elm, Poas magnolia, ira, cypress and manni. The fauna is varied 263 species of amphibians and reptiles and about 400 types of birds. The largest concentration of tapirs in the country can be found there, plus the puma, jaguar, ocelot, jaguaroundi, paccary and cacomistle. In 2002 there were found the pieces of hidden (crushed there in 1965) plane.
