NATIONAL PARKS:
Juan Castro Blanco National Park

Juan Castro Blanco National Park

(14.278 ha), (1992). It`s situated in Alajuela province, east from Ciudad Quesada. It encompasses a few volcanes: Platanar (2.183 m.a.s.l.), Viejo (2.060 m.a.s.l.) and Porvenir (2.267 m.a.s.l.). Slopes of each of them are covered by rainforests. The vegetation is extremely varied with more than 50 % of the total area covered by a mixed primary forest and clearings in the process of regeneration. The most notables species are oaks, lancewood. In the highlands vegetation is stunted. The bird life and fauna include noteworthy like the Quetzals, currasow, black guan, red brocket deer.
